Former Portuguese Prime Minister António Guterres is Uncontested Choice to Succeed Ban Ki-moon as U.N. Secretary-General

The UN Security Council unanimously nominated António Guterres, former Portuguese Prime Minister and UN High Commissioner for Refugees, to succeed Ban Ki-moon as Secretary-General on October 6, 2016. He received 13 votes in support with two abstentions.

Former Portuguese PM and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres, set to become the next UN Secretary-General. All 15 ambassadors of the United Nations Security Council unanimously nominated António Guterres to be the next Secretary-General. Guterres won 13 votes in his support and two abstentions, with zero votes against him. In a formal vote next week, the Portuguese António Guterres should be designated the successor of the South Korean Ban Ki-moon. Mr. Ban Ki-moon is stepping down at the end of 2016 after serving two terms.
